Overview

What leaking tap repair covers — and why it matters.

What it is

Leaking tap repair covers any drip from the spout, base, lever or under-sink connection on traditional, monobloc, ceramic-disc or pull-out kitchen and bathroom taps. We diagnose the cause, swap the failed internal part — washer, cartridge, ceramic disc or seal — and pressure-test under load. Where the body itself has corroded we'll quote a like-for-like replacement on the spot.

Who it's for

Homeowners, landlords and letting agents across Leicestershire, Warwickshire and the West Midlands who want the drip silenced today — not in two weeks' time when 'someone has parts'.

When you need it

As soon as you notice the drip, a stain forming in the sink, or a slow weep from the tap base or below the sink. Left long enough, hard-water deposits seize the cartridge solid and turn a £85 service into a full replacement.

Why professional matters

Most leaking taps are repairable — you don't need a new £180 mixer. A qualified plumber knows which brands accept generic ceramic discs and which need an OEM cartridge, and will pressure-test the repair so the same drip doesn't return in a month.

What happens if you ignore it

The cost of waiting.

A single dripping tap is rarely just a dripping tap. Behind it, the same hard-water scale and worn seals are degrading every other tap in the house — and a tap that drips at the spout is one short step from a tap that weeps at the base, where the water has nowhere to go except into the cupboard below.

Risks if left unrepaired

  • Even a slow drip wastes 5,000–8,000 litres a year — billed on metered properties.
  • Hard-water staining in white ceramic sinks is almost impossible to remove once set.
  • A base leak runs down into MDF kitchen carcasses and swells them within days.
  • Hot-tap drips push your boiler or cylinder to cycle far more often than it should — directly costing energy.
  • Stiff or seized levers are an accessibility risk for older or arthritic users.

Common DIY mistakes we see

  • Tightening the tap head until the cartridge cracks — a £40 cartridge becomes a £180 tap.
  • Forcing a generic washer onto a ceramic-disc tap that was never designed for one.
  • Removing limescale with neat acid descaler, which destroys chrome plating in minutes.
  • Buying a 'matching' replacement tap online with the wrong tail length or thread.
  • Ignoring the under-sink drip because the cupboard floor feels dry — most of the water is sitting in the chipboard.

Our process

A five-step system — every job, every time.

  1. 1

    Diagnosis

We identify the tap type (compression, ceramic disc, monobloc, pull-out) and locate the failure point — spout, base, lever, or under-sink connector.

  2. 2

    Isolation

Isolate at the service valve or stopcock. Sink and worktop protected before any work begins.

  3. 3

    Repair

Worn cartridge, ceramic disc or washer replaced with the correct part — we carry stock for Bristan, Grohe, Mira, Hansgrohe and every other common UK brand.

  4. 4

    Test

Run hot and cold under full pressure for at least 5 minutes, including the base seal and the under-sink flexi connections.

  5. 5

    Clean & Guarantee

Tap, sink and worktop wiped down, descaled where needed, and written 12-month guarantee handed over.

In detail

The technical detail behind a proper leaking tap repair.

Tap design has changed more in the last 20 years than in the previous hundred. The right repair depends entirely on which generation of tap you have.

Traditional rubber-washer taps

Found in older Leicestershire properties and many outdoor and utility taps. Repair is a simple washer swap, but we always check the seating with a re-cutter — a pitted seat will chew through a new washer within months. We use rubber (not nitrile) washers for cold and EPDM for hot.

Ceramic-disc monoblocs

The standard for most kitchen and bathroom mixers since the early 2000s. The cartridge contains two polished ceramic discs that wear over time, especially in hard-water areas. We replace with brand-matched cartridges where available, or with high-tolerance generic Kerox or Sedal units where the original brand has discontinued parts.

Quarter-turn taps

Common on cloakroom basins and bib taps. The ceramic disc is housed in a small cartridge unit that's brand-specific — we carry the most common 1/2-inch BSP cartridges in 90° and 180° turn configurations.

Pull-out and pull-down kitchen mixers

Modern flexible-spout mixers add two extra failure points — the diverter at the base and the hose seal at the spout. We replace both as a pair where one has failed, because both run on the same wear cycle.

Thermostatic shower mixers (basin variants)

Some bathroom taps share thermostatic cartridges with shower valves. The repair requires the correct brand-matched TMV-grade cartridge and a temperature re-set after fitting — we carry the calibration tool for this and certify the outlet temperature after.

When to repair vs. replace

Repair is the right call when the tap body is sound, the chrome is intact and the cartridge is the only failed part. Replace when the body itself is corroded, the spout has hairline cracks, or the tap design is older than 1995 and parts are no longer made. We tell you straight on site — repair-and-stand-behind, or replace-with-a-warranty.
